Vacations have definitely developed above the decades for folks in and all around the New Bedford spot, and so have our attitudes about taking them.
Friday’s program showcased a excursion down memory lane, in which lots of of us recalled the vacations of our youth. Relatives vacations ended up quite distinct not that extensive back. Increasing up in the 1960s in working-course New Bedford, Massachusetts, the notion of likely away on holiday vacation was foreign to several of us.
If you were fortunate more than enough to have a father who got getaway time, it was possibly spent in the backyard when Father puttered about fixing or painting issues he did not have time to do though he was performing. Maybe he’d load up the station wagon for a trip to a most loved summertime cottage in New Hampshire or Maine. Possibly you’d choose a day trip to Plymouth or the Cape.
New Bedford and Fall River have been full of mills in my youth. Lots of of those factories hummed second and third shifts all year lengthy, apart from for the initially two months of July. For the reason that most of the mills experienced no air conditioning, numerous would shut for these two weeks. For everyone whose dad and mom labored in the mills, as mine did, it was holiday vacation time. There was no such detail as placing in for vacation time through the 12 months as we do currently. Holiday vacation months, if you experienced them, came at the beginning of July. Period of time.
My family members would go tenting. We failed to plan mountaineering excursions to the countrywide parks, white river rafting excursions on the rapids, or go to Disneyland. We failed to have the income for that. But camping meant the extended loved ones would pitch tents in a circle at Wareham’s Maple Park or Amy’s Hideaway in Freetown and participate in horseshoes, swim, have campfires, and consume hamburgers for two weeks. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and all of the pets with each other. It was a great childhood.
Listeners convey to me that vacation time for them meant auto rides to Freetown or Acushnet, relatives picnics at Brooklawn and Buttonwood Parks, or a bus or auto excursion to stop by distant relatives. I spent a lot of summertime days at Mary’s Pond in Rochester or Very long Pond in Lakeville swimming with my cousins. East and West Seashores and Horseneck ended up favorites as very well. Tourism was not a huge point back again then, household time was.
We would go to Lincoln Park, Paragon Park, Rocky Level, Benson’s Wild Animal Farm, or some other adventurous place as summer’s end approached and the new university 12 months loomed.
That was summertime for lots of families in Better New Bedford when I was a child. Traveling off to expensive and faraway places just wasn’t a actuality for most of us back again then. Yet even although we trapped shut to dwelling, time off meant time with family members, and I wouldn’t trade any of it for a thousand visits to Disney Planet.
What are your most loved recollections of vacations and summertime rising up in Higher New Bedford? I bet they are amongst your most treasured.
