CHATHAM — Chatham sits at a crossroads. Already high real estate prices have gone stratospheric during the pandemic, ending any chance for home ownership for many, and potentially driving families out of town. The continued existence of the town’s elementary school may be at stake.

Capital costs from big projects like sewering the town are driving property taxes ever higher, adding to the financial burden of those already living on the edge. And remedies to address newly discovered contamination of town drinking water will likely add to those costs.

These are issues potentially facing the three candidates competing for two seats on the Select Board: Incumbents Cory Metters and Dean Nicastro, and challenger Tom Wilson. There are also three ballot questions requesting Prop. 2 1/2 debt exclusions: $7 million for continued implementation of the town’s wastewater plan; $4.5 million for storm-water systems; and funding for a new senior center (although that article did not pass at last weekend’s town meeting).

The election will be held from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Chatham Community Center, 702 Main St.
